Introduction: Systemic arterial hypertension is characterized as a worldwide public health problem, with increasing prevalence. The Social Determinants of Health are related to social, economic and cultural questions, and play an important role in the processes of illness. Objective: to investigate and describe the relationship between the development and control of systemic arterial hypertension and the effects of the social determinants of health, basing the discussion on the approach proposed by Dahlgren and Whitehead. Methodology: integrative literature review carried out through six steps. A survey of studies was carried out in LILACS, PubMed, IBECS and SciELO databases, combining the descriptors: “Hypertension”, “Social Determinants of Health” and “Risk Factors”. Results: 537 studios were identified after the initial survey; 12 studios were selected to compose the sample. The discussion was carried out in the following thematic areas: individual factors and lifestyle; social and community networks; living and working conditions and socioeconomic, cultural and environmental factors. Conclusion: factors such as low economic and educational level, living conditions and lack of a support network can act as factors that increase the probability of developing uncontrolled hypertension, in addition to other determinants related to lifestyle and individual factors, such as age greater than 45 years. years, overweight/obesity, smoking, alcoholism, single marital status, sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits.
