Abstract

The Journal Club is a study strategy that allows for an update in the teaching of Biology, Medicine and related areas, as well as the improvement of critical assessment skills. There are several reports of its use in teaching and research institutions around the world, but only a few are found in the literature with a focus on education and participant’s perception. The aim of this study was to describe and evaluate the experience of the Journal Club of the Grupo de Pesquisa Epidemiologia das Doenças Infecciosas e Parasitárias (EPIDIP) of the Centro de Estudos Superiores de Lago da Pedra da Universidade Estadual do Maranhão (CESLAP/UEMA). This is an experience report and satisfaction survey of undergraduate students participating in the group, through an anonymous self-administered questionnaire. Sixteen undergraduates answered the questionnaire. Most students rated their experience at the Journal Club as positive, especially those who have already delivered lectures. The use of a Journal Club is present in several areas of the academic environment, mainly by students in the health area, especially medicine and nursing for the validation of information from scientific studies. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the adoption of the EPIDIP Journal Club as a teaching-learning tool, with the capacity and development of competences, skills and critical analysis for the academics that comprise it, has been a satisfactory strategy in teaching of Epidemiology and Parasitology.
