Pharmacists play a fundamental role in the management of pharmacotherapy, promoting the rational use of medicines. Despite the increase in access to medicines in recent decades, there is still a need to make progress in providing guidance on their proper and safe use. The academic training of pharmacists should emphasize humanized care, with a focus on the patient and communication skills that promote treatment adherence. This article investigated the relationship between pharmacists' communication skills and adherence to drug treatment. An integrative literature review was carried out, using the descriptors “adherence to drug treatment,” “health communication,” and “clinical pharmacist,” in the MEDLINE, PubMed, and SciELO databases. Articles in Portuguese and English from 2011 to 2021. The results indicated that pharmacists are effective in driving adherence to pharmacotherapy by involving patients in therapeutic goals. This process requires the continuous development of patient-centered communication skills, from academic training onwards, to strengthen the therapeutic bond. An intrinsic relationship was observed between health communication and adherence to treatment, and it is essential to train pharmacists to establish effective communication. Access to medicines must be accompanied by adequate knowledge to manage pharmacotherapy. In order to achieve therapeutic success, it is essential for pharmacists to promote adherence to treatment, improving results. More studies are needed to delve deeper into this subject.
