Investigation of Genotoxic Changes in Hoplosternum littoralle, in Front of Environmental Contamination, Using the Micronucleus Test

The micronucleus (MN) test is a quick and simple analysis that detects the presence of genotoxic damage in the genetic material of individuals exposed to clastogenic agents. This test has been used to measure the degree of exposure to environmental contaminants that cause genotoxic effects. This study analyzed the presence of genotoxic changes, using the micronucleus test, in fish cells of the species Hoplosternum littorale (tamoatá). 20 samples collected in the streams of the Sharp Community, Presidente Dutra and Ponte da Paraíba, in Manaus, Amazonas, were analyzed. These environments are polluted by effluents that are released into their waters. 1000 cells per slide were analyzed (n = 20,000 cells analyzed in total), from October to November 2022, they were analyzed in the multidisciplinary laboratory of the Centro Universitário do Norte - UNN, in the city of Manaus. 82 micronuclei were identified in the cells of the species sampled from the three streams. The individuals collected in the Sharp Community stream presented a much higher total of micronuclei, corresponding to 73.1% of the total damage, compared to individuals from other streams (Ponte Presidente Dutra 17.07% and Ponte da Paraíba 9, 7%). The quantity of micronuclei is qualitatively significant to indicate possible agents causing genotoxic damage to organisms present in these environments.
