The aim of the study was to describe the prevalence and mortality resulting from adverse effects from medical treatments in the Northeast. This is a descriptive quantitative epidemiological study, carried out using data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study, latest version (2019), regarding the prevalence and mortality resulting from adverse effects from medical treatments in the Northeast between the years 2016 to 2019. According to the survey, the prevalence of adverse effects related to medical treatments in the Northeast was higher in the state of Bahia, totaling 938.48; 953.93; 966.49; 978.42 in the years 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, respectively. Close behind, the state of Ceara, with 801.38, 826.28, 830.17, 815.08 registered cases. Regarding the estimates of deaths, the highest values were identified in the states of Bahia, Maranhão and Pernambuco, respectively. Regarding the comparison of the death rate per 100,000 inhabitants between 1990 and 2019, there was a growing increase. Through the results, it was possible to observe that the prevalence and number of deaths resulting from adverse effects to medical treatments in the Northeast region are high. In this way, the need and importance of implementing and complying with international patient safety goals is shown, in order to promote specific improvements in patient safety through strategies that address problematic aspects in health care.
