Contesta-se, neste texto, a tentativa de Piaget de reduzir o jogo a uma função do pensamento, porquanto considero essa perspectiva uma concepção distorcida a respeito do, pelo fato de se preocupar com uma classe restrita de operações intelectuais e por sua “epistemologia copista”. Ao basear a origem da representação sobre uma noção “copista de imitação” e ao propugnar que esta desempenha apenas a função de replicar conceitos, Piaget priva o jogo de qualquer papel genuinamente constitutivo dentro do pensamento. À vista disso, este texto discute as consequências contraditórias, tanto em termos das evidências acerca da ontogênese do jogo, quanto o recurso final de Piaget no que tange às explicações afetivas e conativas mais características.
